no need to get fancy 👍🏼 // if you’re getting ready to start a whole30, whether it’s your first or fifth, remember that it’s only as complicated as you make it. @jennaswholejourney talked about this in her stories, but she always keeps meals super simple (at least for the first week) to sort of ease into things. if you want to make something with 27 ingredients, I’m not going to stop you, but don’t feel pressured to become a five-star chef overnight. the only goal is to eat real food!
you’re turning violet, violet 😨 // what’s your favorite fruit? mine = blueberries, hands-down. they make an appearance every day, whether in a smoothie, as a snack, or on top of grain-free granola. I eat so many that the owner of my gym has started calling me violet (a la the bloob brat in charlie and the chocolate factory), and at this point it’s been so long I actually respond. what’s the one fruit you would refuse to give up in your regular diet?
mount dishmore 🙄 // if you’ve done a whole30, you know that you incidentally pick up a second job as a dishwasher. it feels like that’s all you ever do! I’m super fortunate that I have an actual dishwashing machine that does most of the work, but I have to remember to give it a little TLC amidst all of its labor. on those rare (read: very, very scarce) occasions where I empty the dishwasher and don’t have dishes to immediately load back in, I run a clean cycle. fill the detergent insert with lemon kool aid powder, and run it on a hot cycle with no dishes inside. good as new!
come to momma 😬 // this bbq shredded chicken was so flipping good during my first week of this whole30 that I legit couldn’t wait to eat it again. and it’s so freaking easy! a couple pounds of chicken breasts, half a bottle of @thenewprimal marinade, one crockpot, four hours on high. the chicken was so tender it basically shred itself. pile that onto some organic arugula, toss on some sliced green onions, and add sweet potato and I’ve just gone from happy to elated. (meal idea goes to @wholedailylife, as usual.) anyone else get this amped about food?
it’s the final countdownnn ⏳// today is day 24 of my whole30 which means I’m in the final week stretch to food freedom. not going to lie to you, I’ve been absolutely jonesing for some pumpkin spice @birchbenders paleo pancakes so that may need to happen next week. I’m also starting to consider my reintroduction, and I’m thinking my only true reintro day will be gluten. it’s a tricky category for me, but I know full and well how the other groups make me feel at this point so I don’t feel a need to retest them this go-around.
hydration nudge 💧// something that I’ve noticed during both rounds of whole30 is how freaking thirsty I am all the time. I don’t know why that is, but I do know that water is the name of the game between now and the end of this reset. I feel like I’m pretty good about always having my reusable bottle nearby but I’ve been waking up with minor headaches so it’s clearly still not enough! going to aim for 100oz per day and see how things go. (meatball recipe found on the @wholedailylife blog!)
netflix and chill 📺 // meal prep is finished, dishes are done, floors are swept, carpets are vacuumed, and outfits are planned for the week. all that’s left to do is binge watch the new season of orange is the new black on the couch with my dog. dinner this evening: two eggs cooked in coconut oil, broccoli and carrots roasted with olive oil and garam masala, a turkey dog, and a couple pieces of prosciutto. what show are you hooked on right now?
NEW BLOG POST ALERT 💥 // you voted, I delivered. the link in my bio will take you to the tale of my first whole30 experience, including what helped, what sucked, and what I found out about my food sensitivities. give it a read (or not; you’re the boss, applesauce). now back to my remaining hot dog hash for lunch before I dive into this week’s meal prep!
over easy like sunday morning 🍳 // breakfast today was a total experiment. took my leftover stir fry from friday, and shredded the chicken left from the remaining thai curry drumstick, and tossed it all in a homemade “peanut sauce.” I whisked together almond butter, coconut milk, coconut aminos, and garlic powder. topped it with a fried egg, because breakfast. we’re off to the beach with our books here in a little bit - happy sunday errbody.
keeping saturday spicy 🌶 // I don’t own an instant pot (because they terrify me), but my boyfriend does, so we made dinner at his place using the @wholekitchensink taco meat recipe. chopped romaine, sliced olives, salsa, and avocado joined the party to make a bomb dot com taco salad. may or may not have had a carrot cake larabar afterward to cut the heat!
you’re allowed to phone it in ☎️ // there’s a lot of emphasis put on cooking at home during the whole30, which I love doing, but it’s great to hand over the reins every once in a while, too. it’s so hot today that I couldn’t even think about cooking lunch, so I ran by my favorite food truck and built my own salad combo. mixed greens, carrots, cabbage, red peppers, cucumbers, pineapple, grilled shrimp, and garlic nutritional yeast dressing. fresh, locally-sourced, and freakin’ delicious.
fuel your meat suit 🍠 // headed to my saturday morning workout soon and let me tell you, after seeing what’s programmed for the day, I’m mega grateful I geared up with this plate full of goodness. hoping it’s exactly what I need to survive the five (yep) back-to-back metcons that are about to take place. but first: coffee and crossword, per usual.
let the weekend begin 🍗 // it had been too long since drumsticks were on my plate, so I used @primal_gourmet’s thai curry chicken recipe to end my friday on a high note. I don’t have a grill, but I roasted these puppies on a cooling rack set on top of a baking sheet to get them all-over toasty. whipped up a stir fry to go with, which had cauli rice, carrots, broccoli, garlic, bone broth, and coconut aminos. satisfied is an understatement.
@applegate to the rescue 🙌🏼 // this week has been... frustrating. no fewer than ten of our normal operations have gone haywire and I’ve spent more time waiting and troubleshooting than actually getting things done. having said that, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel and most things should be back to normal next week. in the meantime, I’m super grateful for quick food options like this hash I made last night to keep me full and focused. happy friday, people!
ta ta frittata 👋🏼 // finished off the last of the pizza frittata and pesto zoodles for breakfast this mornin’, which you can find on the @wholedailylife blog! the pesto on its own is worth making, regardless of what you’re going to put it on. I love that it uses hemp seeds instead of pine nuts - way less expensive and a bit more protein! while this was reheating, I threw together a marinade for those chicken drumsticks I showed y’all yesterday and I’m officially pumped for dinner.
hey wait this isn’t food 🤨 // breaking up my feed feed with a little personal victory from this week. went to an awesome panel monday night hosted by even more awesome women (cough, @babeswhohustle), and when they announced the q&a had opened up I hesitated. I’m super introverted but I really wanted to ask these rad ladies for advice so I just put one foot in front of the other and did the damn thing. I speak in front of strangers all the time with no issue but something about speaking in a room full of powerful female peers was so much more intimidating. but I was like, “dude, you’re here. that means you’re a powerful female, too. just ask the damn question.” so I did. and I’m glad. (thanks to @karinaaragonbuchanan for letting me snag her mic for a hot second.) photo by @verance_.
hot dogs never looked so good 🌭// what was meant to be a lazy dinner turned into something awesome. sort of channeling fall with this skillet hash; dreamin’ of dead leaves and cooler temps. we’ve got @applegate turkey hot dogs, crispy prosciutto, sweet potato, onion, brussels sprouts, granny smith apple, thyme, cinnamon, and chicken bone broth in this bad boy. work: minimal. flavor: maximal.
silver linings 🌾 // although I didn’t really want to go grocery shopping in the middle of my workday, trying to stay presentable while walking around in florida heat, it DID mean going home for lunch. which means eating from a real plate, using real silverware, and hanging out with my favorite four-legged amigo. and that was really dang nice.
