Long-beaked common dolphins surf and leap through breaking waves off South Africa’s Wild Coast. During the annual Sardine Run in June and July tens of thousands of these dolphins migrate north to feed on the vast schools of these calorie rich silvery forage fish. The rest of the year the majority of these dolphins inhabit the shelf region off the southern cape where they feed predominantly on chokka squid.

During April/May 2017 I spent almost a month on remote Marion Island on assignment for @natgeo magazine. This South African Sub-Antarctic outpost is a true global seabird hotspot, with 28 breeding species. A large bronze whaler shark rushes mouth agape through a baitball of sardines. It almost looks like the shark is inhaling the fish like a industrial strength vacuum cleaner. Photographing a baitball at close range is both a exhilarating and unnerving experience. I know I am NOT on the menu, but am treated just like any other shark attending this sardine banquet...sometimes I am head-butted, tail slapped and body slammed a dozen times every minute. To make good images during such chaos one has simply get on with the task at hand and trust the sharks not to make a mistake. Sometimes that's easier said then done.... @natgeo @natgeocreative

Wild pink salmon gather and rest in the lower pools of a small stream on Gil Island before tackling waterfalls in their annual spawning migration. Canada's Great Bear Rainforest is home to thousands of such fragile watercourses critical to ensuring the next generation of salmon. ’at territory @bcwhales @thephotosociety @natgeo @natgeocreative @pacificwild

The waters around the northern Galápagos Islands of Wolf and Darwin are one of few places in the world where mature adult whale sharks make regular seasonal appearances. This 6 foot silky shark is dwarfed by a giant 30 + foot female whale shark. Photographing theses giant is difficult, the currents are ripping and they swim incredibly fast and show little curiosity towards underwater photographers. Shot on assignment for @natgeo magazine for a story on climate change and the Galápagos Islands in the June 2017 issue. In collaboration with @parquegalapagos @darwinfound and @saveourseasfoundation

On this World Oceans Day weekend I really wish that more of our oceans looked like the Hanifaru marine reserve, especially during peak manta ray season. Being surrounded by hundreds of large reef mantas gave me a sobering glimpse of how the abundance of marine megafauna has declined dramatically in other parts of our oceans. In the world of the North Pacific rocky reef the sunflower sea star is the equivalent of the lion on the African savanna or the wolf on the Arctic tundra. Instead of hunting gazelles or elk, one of the world’s largest sea stars (3 feet wide) stalks marine grazers like abalone and sea urchins. Armed with 24 arms lined with over 15,000 tube feet, this formidable predator can reach speeds up to 4 feet per minute, which is super fast for a sea star. Shot in collaboration with @pacificwild in Gitga’at First Nations territory.

Marion island is home to hundreds of thousands of penguins and lies deep in the southern ocean, about halfway between South Africa and Antarctica. In 2017 I was privileged to spend a month on Marion photographing for @natgeo magazine. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life, but sadly some the island’s seabirds are now in grave danger. My friends have set up a dedicated Instagram account to raise awareness of this situation. Please be so kind and HELP them by following @marionisland THANK YOU

Just north of the Horn of Africa, sandwiched between Somalia and Eritrea lies Djibouti. This small nation hosts one of most important, yet least visited whale shark aggregations sites in the world. While volatile regional politics have kept large scale tourism away, marine scientists have been making important discoveries there for more than a decade. Every winter whale sharks gather to feed on plankton blooms fueled by wind driven upwelling and fierce desert sunshine. Unpublished photograph from my @natgeo story Arabian Seas. @natgeocreative
