This morning, Aretha Franklin, "Queen of Soul," died in her Detroit home at the age of 76. Her cause of death was pancreatic cancer, the Associated Press reports. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The exact cause of pancreatic cancer isn't well understood, but we know that genetics, age, a history of diabetes, and a history of chronic pancreatic inflammation (pancreatitis) can increase your risk for the disease. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As the news broke, celebrities and admirers paid their respects to Franklin on social media. The 18-time Grammy winner's family also released the following statement to the AP: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "We have been deeply touched by the incredible outpouring of love and support we have received from close friends, supporters, and fans all around the world. Thank you for your compassion and prayers. We have felt your love for Aretha, and it brings us comfort to know that her legacy will live on. As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time." | 📸: @gettyimages

"I remember waking up after my first surgery and refusing to look at my ileostomy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I remember my first bag change in the hospital with the stoma nurse. I cried the entire time. I remember my first few bag changes after coming home. I cried every single time and could barely look at my stoma. My parents had to help me with the process. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But I also remember celebrating each little milestone along the way. I remember celebrating NOT crying the entire time or actually taking a moment to look at my stoma and understand how it worked. I remember celebrating my first bag change on my own. It took me 45 minutes, but I texted my parents at work, so proud of myself. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Why am I telling you this? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Because so many people go through these surgeries and feel this immense pressure to 'accept' everything instantly. I sure didn’t. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In fact, I’m still in the process of learning to accept everything. For some, the process of acceptance is quick and simple, but for others, it takes longer and that is 100% OK. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Crying does not make you weak. Asking for help does not make you weak. Needing time to grieve does not make you weak. Not being 100% grateful that it isn’t worse does not make you weak. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I will always promote positivity and happiness, but please know that I do struggle too! Bag changes still make me uneasy, but I have come a long way from where I started. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Bottom line: you can be scared and still be STRONG" -@kristenschronicles

"I had a new patient come in this morning and I had to share this story with you. He seemed a bit abrasive--somewhat rough around the edges you might say. At the end of our visit, he stood up and got right up to my face remarking that I was a beautiful woman and suggested I 'take that thing off my head so people could better see that.' ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I was taken aback and a bit shaken but here is what I said to him: Well that is not what I want to be seen for. I want people rather to appreciate me for who I am as a person--on the inside, not what I manifest outwardly. Modesty is my choice; it is what empowers me to be more than a 'pretty face.' It also protects me in many ways. It encourages me to better myself; it shows my respect for my beliefs, my culture, and my respect for myself. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ He definitely wasn’t expecting that answer. His reply back 'Really? Wow, I have to say that’s a good enough answer for me!' When he left judging from his smile and change in demeanor, I could tell that he had greater respect for me and my religion." -@eyegirlmd | 📸: @laurenbscottstudios

In her article in the @voguemagazine September issue, @beyonce spoke about the complications she experienced while pregnant with her twins. The story was shocking and honest, as well as reminiscent of @serenawilliams’ interview in Vogue earlier this year, in which the tennis champion discussed her own potentially fatal childbirth complications. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Their stories may seem oddly similar, but the statistics show that their experiences are far from a coincidence. Research shows that black women have a higher rate of pregnancy complications than women of other races. They also are tragically 3 to 4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes. A variety of factors are thought to contribute to this discrepancy, but experts agree that the problem likely stems, at least in part, from systemic racism. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ About 700 women die each year in the U.S. as a result of pregnancy or childbirth complications, according to the CDC, and something needs to change. At the same time that we applaud Beyoncé and Williams for telling their stories, we must vow to continue to amplify these stories from women of color and not stop listening until we find a solution. | Design: @morgannjay

"For years I avoided touching my own stomach, and would be horrified if anyone else touched it even if it was by accident because it was the part of me I was the most insecure about. I thought the fact that I had a little squish and softness there made me unworthy and unattractive. Now I’m in a place where I have more squish than I’ve ever had and I love it even more. Why? Because my mind and heart are in the most healthy and happy place they have ever been because I know that my body’s physical appearance has absolutely nothing to do with my worth.🙌🏼✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Physical touch can be an incredible practice on a self-acceptance journey. Touching the parts of yourself that you are most insecure about can actually help to normalize them, and help you recognize that, that particular part of you is just that...a part of you! It’s just a part of the gloriousness that is your body. Your body that carries you through life and allows you to be who you are. Your body is a vessel, and it looks exactly how it is supposed to look." 📷: @mybodywpg |
