Thank you to everyone who came out to today’s forum. It was great hearing from students and members of the community! I spoke about my ACTION for National Service bill, that would expand service opportunities like AmeriCorps, VISTA, SeniorCorps, and provide relief for student debt. It was great visiting with seniors at the East Hartford South End Senior Center with Mayor Leclerc! We had a great discussion and spoke about my plan to enhance Social Security benefits and strengthen the program for future generations! I was pleased to speak with the Hartford Medical Society. I spoke about the challenges facing our country’s health care system as well as my Medicare Buy-In bill in Congress. We have the tools to make health care more affordable and more accessible and we should use them.
Young adults across the country stood up, walked out and said enough is enough. They're brave enough to stand up to the NRA, why can't the Republicans in Congress do the same? Our country has been denied a vote on any gun violence prevention measures. Congress remains complicit in gun violence until there’s a vote and action is taken. #EnoughisEnough
I am reminded of one of his most succinct quotes. "The time is always right to do what is right”, and his famous call for the “fierce urgency of now”. There is always room for improvement and we can act on this through engaging our communities through service to each other.
ICYMI, I along with my colleague and friend, Rep. Joe Courtney introduced our bill, The Medicare Buy-In and Health Care Stabilization Act at the Manchester Memorial Hospital in Manchester today. This bill would allow Americans to buy-in to Medicare from the ages 50 to 64. This will provide an affordable insurance option for those approaching retirement age who have been hardest hit by spikes in premiums and out of pocket expenses. At the same time, it will help to stabilize the individual market and bring down overall premiums by improving the risk pool.
Today I announced the America Wins Act. At a time when the American people are yearning for solutions, we have an extraordinary opportunity to put the country to work rebuilding our infrastructure. As a nation, we have spent trillions of dollars overseas while other countries have invested in their infrastructure. Meanwhile, our infrastructure – once the envy of the world – has fallen into a state of disrepair. The American Society of Civil Engineers recently gave our infrastructure a grade of “D+” – that is simply unacceptable. I am introducing the America Wins Act in order to repair our crumbling roads and bridges and to jump start transformative projects that can solve our infrastructure challenges. This is a jobs program for the middle class and it is fully paid for without adding to the national debt. It is time to invest in our infrastructure and invest in America.
Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower Geared TurboFan (GTF) Engine represents the future of commercial aviation and Connecticut is at the forefront of this game-changing technology. This is truly a story of American manufacturing success and innovation. Just last year, the GTF engine contributed $233 million to our Connecticut manufacturing supply chains. After 20 years of research and development, the cutting edge technology behind the GTF engine has raised the industry benchmark through significant improvements in fuel efficiency, noise reduction, and reduced emissions. The surging global demand for this engine, as indicated by the 8,000 order backlog, means a sustained economic boost for Connecticut and the creation of thousands of jobs and the support of hundreds of small and medium size businesses that comprise the backbone of our State’s industrial base. I am immensely proud to welcome the men and women of Pratt & Whitney who made this vision a reality, and I am honored to welcome this incredible engine here today.
