In 2009, President @barackobama signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act into law, expanding hate crime law to include crimes motivated by a victim's actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability. “Because no one in America should ever be afraid to walk down the street holding the hands of the person they love.”

On June 28, 1969, a community rose up in response to a police raid at the Stonewall Inn, sparking the modern LGBT civil rights movement in the United States. In 2016, nearly 50 years later, President @BarackObama designated the site as a national monument to honor the fight for equality.
