The United States has officially withdrew from the United Nations Human Rights Council, after claiming the council was "hypocritical," and had a strong anti-Israel bias. The US UN ambassador, Nikki Haley, stated the committee "makes a mockery of human rights," and has a "chronic anti-Israel bias." Various UN officials have expressed their discontent with the move, stating human rights violations will be even more difficult to monitor with the US' withdrawal, but Israel has supported the decision. The Human Rights Council has been criticized for allowing various nations who are guilty of violating human rights to join the committee.⠀ Photo Credit: Politico⠀ Tags:⠀

Transport for London has announced a £1.5 billion investment into 94 new, state-of-the-art trains for the Piccadilly Line, which currently operates trains as old as 43 years, despite the trains only having a “design life” of 40 years. ⠀ ⠀ The new trains will be introduced to the Piccadilly Line by 2027 and will increase capacity by up to 60%. The line currently has 700,000 commuters per day. The number of trains per hour will also increase from 24 to up to 35. ⠀ ⠀ This is part of the “Deep Tube” Upgrade Program which involves the Piccadilly, Bakerloo, Central and Waterloo & City Lines. ⠀ ⠀ In total, the program will see the total capacity of the Underground increased by 30% by 2035, whilst London’s population is only expected to increase by 20% by 2040. This means that the upgrades will allow London’s population to grow around the underground. ⠀ ⠀ Crossrail, which is named the Elizabeth Line, will also be in partial operation by late 2018. When it’s in full operation it will increase capacity by 10%. ⠀ ⠀ PC: Londonist, Evening Standard⠀ ⠀ Tags:

British Prime Minister Theresa May has announced that the government will be pledging an additional £20 billion ($26.5 billion) a year to the United Kingdom’s National Health Service by 2023. ⠀ ⠀ She described the announcement as a “birthday present” for the NHS, which will become 70 years old this year. This additional money will raise the budget by 3.4% annually until 2023. Mrs May hinted at tax increases to pay for this massive funding increase, as well as claiming that the ‘Brexit dividend’ will partly fund it which drew heavy criticism. ⠀ Since 2010, the NHS has seen a cut and stagnant budget due to heavy austerity measures put in place by the Conservative Government. The NHS budget has grown by around 1% every year since 2010, compared to 4% on average during the Blair and Brown administrations. ⠀ ⠀ According to the Kings Fund and NHS executives themselves, the Health Service needs at least £30 billion additionally by 2021 to avoid a major crisis similar to that seen during the winter of 2016, which the Red Cross described as a ‘humanitarian disaster’. Since then, the NHS has however won international awards for quality and standard of care, and has been ranked the best health service in the world by multiple organisations. ⠀ ⠀ PC: The Guardian, Independent ⠀ ⠀ Tags:

At least eight people have been killed, including six people of the same family, after arson and gun attacks in Managua, Nicaragua, only a day after a ceasefire was created between the protesters and the government. The family mattress business was reportedly set ablaze by two masked men with Molotov cocktails, who have been labeled as pro-government militia forces by the opposition, however, the government has denied all claims. Two others were also killed by pro-government groups and armed police protecting makeshift barricades. These protests with the government started with Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega’s refusal to resign or accept any new election results, and recent policies of removing pensions and social security, causing many students and pensioners to take to the streets, starting this April. Despite these attacks, the opposition groups have agreed to carry on with the ceasefire, which is to be monitored by the country’s Roman Catholic Church. The United States' Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has released the FBI Inspector General Michael Horowitz's highly anticipated 600-page long report, including information on anti-President Donald Trump bias, alleged Russian collusion in the 2016 presidential election, and information regarding former FBI Director James Comey. The report revealed FBI attorney Lisa Page and agent Peter Strzok exchanged text messages expressing their negative views of Mr. Trump during the election, and even stated "we'll stop it," regarding Trump's victory. Mr. Strzok and Mrs. Page were former members of the team investigating possible Russian collusion, but abandoned the team after FBI officials discovered their exchanges. However, further evidence proved Page and Strzok were strong advocates of investigating former Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and her email scandal, and joined the team with no intentions to attack Trump. The report also revealed reports of Mr. Comey's behavior while he was FBI Director, including "insubordinate" actions, and accusations of being egotistical and scheming his own agendas. Despite these reports against former members of the FBI, the FBI concluded they acted "insensitively," but none of them acted out of political partisanship, and found "no evidence that the conclusions by department prosecutors were affected by bias or other improper considerations," regarding the collusion probe.⠀ Photo Credit: The Hill⠀ Tags:⠀

Germany Report Download 11 307

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's government is in turmoil after her Bavarian partner in government, the CSU, promised to close Germany's borders to migrants who have already been registered in other European nations. Led by Horst Seehofer, the Interior Minister, the Bavarian CSU is facing heavy pressure from the right wing as the populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) makes significant gains ahead of Bavaria's regional elections. Seehofer's pledge came as Germany's migrant debate reached a new level in recent weeks after a 14 year old girl was found raped and murdered by a Syrian migrant who had been rejected asylum status, but allowed to remain in the country. The murder sparked outrage in Germany and many placed blame on Merkel's 'open door' policy to migrants in 2015. With pressure from within her government and from the opposition in the form of the AfD, Merkel's place in power is in serious question. If she refuses to go back on her immigration policy, she will likely have to fire Seehofer from his position and lose the CSU from government, which would collapse the German coalition's majority and possibly force a no confidence vote in Merkel as CDU leader or lead to new elections.
