Photo by @babaktafreshi Walking inside this World Heritage Site I was lost in time, surrounded by the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art. Expressive paintings that unlock some of the cultural layers of India. Ajanta Caves are rock-cut Buddhist monuments which date as far as the 2nd century BC. Photographed here is a painting of Padmapāni (holder of the Lotus in Sanskrit), who embodies the compassion of all Buddhas.

Photo by @jodymacdonaldphoto // Traveling in the Sahara Desert requires a shift in perspective. First impressions would lead you to believe that it is a vast and barren landscape but when you look more closely, this place of solitude has endless beauty. From the sand dunes that are sculpted to perfection by the wind to the animals and vegetation that live within its seemingly impossible ecosystem, it’s a place that will force you to slow down and pay attention to the details. Photo by @FransLanting With their mothers gone, two orphaned orangutan are hanging on to each other in a rehab center in Sabah, Borneo where people take care of them as best as they can. But as the forest they need shrinks year after year they’ll need more help from us all to stem the decline of the species as a whole. I’m sharing this image in recognition of @WorldOrangutanDay and hope you’ll check out some of the organizations that are in the forefront of helping orangutans like @wildaid @world_wildlife and @orangutanfoundationintl. And follow me @FransLanting and @ChristineEckstrom for more encounters with endangered orangutans.

Photo by @gerdludwig. “Travel, like dreams, is a door that opens from the real world into a world that is yet to be discovered.” — Guy de Maupassant. “Sabantuy” in Kazan, Russia is a traditional Tatar summer festival, popular with both the young and old alike. Attendees celebrate traditional Tatar cuisine, games, folklore, and crafts. As if entering into a virtual reality, a participant traverses through a mural representing rural Tatarstan. The city of Kazan, known as the Third Capital of Russia and home to roughly 1.2 million residents, is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, an ancient Muslim region in the heart of Russia. The rich and fascinating Tatar culture of Kazan has, for centuries, widely proclaimed tolerance with other religions and ethnicities. @thephotosociety @natgeocreative

photo by @andrea_frazzetta // Young fishermen returning to the island of Nosy Iranja. Nosy Iranja is located north-west of Madagascar, 45 kilometers (30 miles) from Nosy Be. The archipelago of Nosy Be is one of the top destinations in Madagascar, its islands blessed with gorgeous beaches, corals, tropical forests, and a slow and easy pace of life. The Nosy Be archipelago is home to the Sakalava people, once part of a powerful kingdom that ruled much of western Madagascar. Today, the Sakalava are known for their seafaring abilities and their women’s elaborate face-painting designs. Several small fishing villages dot the islands. Photograph by @CristinaMittermeier // One second I was alone, and the next I was surrounded by hundreds of gentoo penguins appearing like ghosts from the deep. After spending the day feeding at sea, they were returning to land and their hungry chicks. Clumsy and funny on land, they swim like a symphony in motion underwater. Several seals lurked close by, waiting to ambush them and I had to smile when I realized they were using me as a “shield” to get to land safely. on @CristinaMittermeier to hear about another dive encounter, this time, with a mischievous leopard seal.

A Glacier under the Northern Lights Photo by @babaktafreshi The World at Night project A night in the far north in early March. This spectacular glacier in southeast Iceland became alive at dark with aurora borealis shining gently on it. The frozen lagoon is on the foot of 2110-meter high ice-covered Oraefajokull volcano, within the Vatnajokull National Park. Even to me who travels twice a year to Iceland for aurora photo workshops, this was a stunning night as aurora activity increased to storm level. Follow me @babaktafreshi to explore the beauties and wonders after dark. @natgeocreative
