Photo @stephen_matera // Clouds hover around the summit of Mt. Rainier and the Carbon Glacier at sunrise in summer, Mt. Rainier National Park. The Carbon Glacier is located on the north side of Mt. Rainier and terminates at about 3,500 feet above sea level, making it the lowest-elevation glacier in the contiguous United States. At 5.7 miles long, the Carbon glacier also is the longest of any U.S. glacier outside of Alaska. Follow me @stephen_matera for more images like this from Washington and around the world.

Photo by @michaelclarkphoto // Cloud Gate is a sculpture created by Anish Kapoor in downtown Chicago’s Millenium Park that invites interaction. It has been nicknamed “The Bean” and reflects both the city and the viewers, bending, stretching and distorting everything into wild shapes (see the second image). For photographers this sculpture is exhilarating as it has endless photographic opportunities.

The Perseid Night Photo by @babaktafreshi The World at Night project Stars of constellation Orion, the Hunter, rise over a high Sierra lake in California this morning during the Perseid Meteor Shower. At 9000 ft (3000 m), away from light pollution, it was a beautiful celestial display. If you have missed it, the show continues in the next few nights, with fewer meteors. More of the shooting stars appear after midnight when constellation Perseus rises high in the sky. Follow me @babaktafreshi to explore the wonders after dark. @natgeocreative

photo by @andrea_frazzetta // An aerial view of the of Nosy Iranja Island and its famous white-sand beach. Nosy Iranja is located north-west of Madagascar, 45 kilometers (30 miles) from Nosy Be. Nosy Iranja is actually formed by two islands, Nosy Iranja Be, the bigger one and Nosy Iranja Kely. Those are connected by a sandbank, only visible at low tide. On Nosy Iranja Be there is a small fishing village and a lighthouse designed by Gustav Eiffel. The island is also the breeding place for two species of turtles, green and hawksbill. Photograph by @jodymacdonaldphoto // Continuing to celebrate World Elephant Day! Elephants are one of the most intelligent creatures on the planet and they are disappearing faster than they are reproducing. Globally, their population has declined by approximately 62% over the last decade. The loss of elephants gravely affects many species that depend on elephant-maintained ecosystems and weakens the diversity of nature itself. They are running out of space and time. Thanks to all the people and organizations that fight to save and protect these incredible animals. Follow me @jodymacdonaldphoto to see more elephant images from my travels. @natgeocreative

Photo by @jimrichardsonng Atop the high hill in the Isle of Muck I had a grand view of Scotland’s Small Isles, Muck beneath my feet, Eigg hulking in the distance. And I was getting a lesson in history and the odd appeal of rugged island life from Muck’s owner. Looking at Lawrence MacEwan on top of his island, being blown by a gale, you might think he’s as wild as his horses. In truth he is a lovely, gentle man, devoted to his island. If you were to have a laird then Lawrence is the laird you want. (Unlike nearby Eigg in the background that suffered under atrocious ownership until the disgusted islanders bought the island for themselves.) For me Muck will always be a place of goodness. Follow me @jimrichardsonng for more Scotland. @natgeo @natgeotravel

Photo by @pedromcbride // Wildfire: Local fires in my community continue as do many blazes across the West. Ecologically, fire can improve the health of ecosystems that have become over grown but the scope of these uncontrolled infernos wreak havoc on communities, displacing thousands. Thanks to all the firefighters, hotshots and pilots working tirelessly to keep our fire seasons, which are now longer and hotter, under control. To see more follow @pedromcbride
