Congrats to @taiamorley and @rahele_studio on winning the first @SCBWI Social Media Mentorship Award For Illustrators! @laurentlinn and I were delighted to present Taia and Rahele with their award certificates on the main stage at #LA18SCBWI. Thanks to all who applied for our new Mentorship Award; Laurent and I went through everyone's art and social media in detail, and I discovered some more illustrators I need to follow. 🎨 Congrats again to Taia and Rahele! Rahele also won the overall Portfolio Showcase Award. Do check out both of their Instagram feeds to see samples of their work.
Thanks to 6-year-old Saketh for his wonderful entry in my 4th Annual Summer "Look Again" Challenge for young artists and writers ages 6-12. Deadline for entries: Aug. 31st, midnight EST. Huge thanks to @teaching3rdwithmrg (& @sarahsteachingpoints ) for the recent kind words about I'M SAD by me & @michaelianblack @simonkids! #Repost @teaching3rdwithmrg with @get_repost ・・・ By nature, I’m a positive person. I walk through life looking for the good in everything. In the past, when people around me were upset, I always wanted to find a quick fix to bring them back to happy. I’ve learned that sometimes, you just have to be sad. That’s why I’m thrilled to share I’m Sad by @michaelianblack and @inkygirl with my readers this year. 📚This is a simple and beautiful story about a flamingo who is feeling down and doesn’t understand why. Through the story the flamingo’s friends try to make the flamingo happy and nothing works. In the end, they learn that being sad doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Sometimes you just need a friend to listen. ❤️
Congrats to the 2018 Class of @scbwi Illustration Mentees! From left to right: @sara.gavryckji @nightengailart @zahra_marwan @erin_balzer @buttersketch @chadhunterstudio. Thanks to @paulozelinsky & @diandramae for the photo. You can find out more about the new Mentees and their work on the @kidlitartists blog, Twitter & Instagram over the coming months (thanks to @meridthmckeangimbel @boygirlparty @diandramae @jenbetton @anarandaillustration for helping make that happen!). 🎨 I’ll be posting a photo of the new @scbwi Social Media Mentorship Award winners soon (just waiting for the photo). 🎨 Thanks to the @scbwi and especially the Illustration Committee for making this award/program possible! This Mentorship award helped jumpstart my children’s book career back in 2010. 🎨 #scbwi #scbwiart #kidlitillustrators #kidlitartists
I’d forgotten about this 2012 comic until it was posted on @ byWriterWriter’s Twitter feed. Some people nowadays may not remember/know, but my initial focus was solely on writing middle grade. I signed on with my awesome agent @gknowlton58 while I was writing middle grade. Now I love writing/illustrating picture books but ALSO hope to get my middle grade published someday. I’ve set aside my old MG novels (I’ve written three, sent out two) because I’ve learned so much since then, and am currently working on new projects about which I am VERY excited. No guarantee that they will ever get published, of course, but meanwhile I’m enjoying the process and am full of hope. :-) ✏️ This comic applies just as much to illustration as it does to writing, of course. And after attending some of the wonderful keynotes and sessions at #LA18SCBWI, I am eager to dive back into doing BOTH. 📚 Happy writing and illustrating, all! ✏️ #comicsofinstagram #writinglife
Thanks to all who attended my sessions or came up to say hi at #LA18SCBWI! I had SUCH a fantastic time. My first time on faculty! I will post more when I get back to Toronto and have had a chance to unpack, catch up with emails etc. HUGE thanks to the @scbwi (especially the Illustration Committee) for inviting me! 🎨 P.s. It was a delight to finally meet Dial art director @lilymalcom in person! Thanks to Lily for taking this photo.
I love @paulozelinsky's stream-of-consciousness doodling, and seeing his doodles have inspired me to do more s-o-c doodling in my own creative journals. Swipe through to see him working on this doodle during the #LA18SCBWI Illustrators Intensive. This piece began with a doodle exercise in David Ezra Stein's talk. I especially love the Squirrel. :-)
Stream-of-consciousness doodling at the #LA18SCBWI Illustrators Intensive. I started doing a lot more SOM doodling in my creative journal after seeing @paulozelinsky's doodles so was VERY EXCITED to find myself sitting beside him at the Illus Intensive, both of us doodling. See my next post for a photo of what he was doodling while I was doodling mine. Paul inspires me in so many ways.
Just found out that I’M SAD is going into another printing, woohoo!!!! Thanks to author @michaelianblack for the heads-up and to @jridpath for the photo; I’m still at #LA18SCBWI, but the package arrived yesterday. 📚 Thank you SO much to everyone who bought a copy of this book by Michael and me, or who told someone about our book. 📚🥔 cc: @simonkids
Just arrived in Los Angeles for #LA18SCBWI, staying with friends. Going through some of my presentation slideshows: this is one I’m showing during my Creative Harvesting session at the Illustrators’ Intensive, from my sketch journal. It’s an example of how I sometimes use my journal as self-therapy, when I need to express a complicated emotion. I can’t remember exactly what inspired this entry, but I suspect it was something I read in the news. 🎨 I think I drew this with a Lamy Safari inked up with some Robert Oster (Blue Bondi, maybe?). 🎨 Other sessions I’m giving at the conference include a Social Media Master Class For Writers & Illustrators, and a Photoshop Tips session (Things I Wish I Knew Earlier). Hope to see some of you there! 📚 This is my very first time on faculty at SCBWI-LA, and I am super-excited (and a wee bit nervous :-)). 🎨 #sketchjournal #journaling #dailyjournal #comicsofinstagram
Educators, librarians, booksellers: feel free to download/print any of my free posters, activity sheets and other bonus material: DebbieOhi.com/printready. ✏️ Some days, reading the news makes me feel like I’m in a (badly written) dystopian YA. How I cope: (1) read books that give me hope, and (2) help create books (and posters!) that give hope. 📚 ✏️ 📚 ✏️ 📚 ✏️ 📚 #printreadyposter #classroomdecor #classroomposters
