While in Alaska a fortnight ago, we were thrilled to watch, listen, and photograph humpback whales employing bubble-net feeding, a complex feeding strategy. While many marine animals use bubbles to assist in prey capture, the coordinated and specific methods used by humpbacks are unique to whales in Southeast Alaska and are seen only in certain areas and seasons. A group of humpbacks will dive down to a school of herring, where one whale will release a ring of bubbles from its blowhole while spiraling under the fish. The air rises to the surface, trapping the fish. Simultaneously, another whale will produce vocalizations to further frighten the fish into small groups. The whales then lunge in unison to the surface through the bubble net with mouths open. The herring are trapped from all sides and scooped up by the whales. . .

Unsung, unique and ultra sensitive. The Turkey Vulture is actually one of North America's most fascinating bird species. If a turkey vulture is disturbed or harassed, it will throw up on whoever is bothering it. Even the vulture babies will do this! . .

I spent July 13 and July 15 photographing three adult Lewis' Woodpeckers in Sweet Grass County, Montana. All three are actively feeding the young in the cavity, bringing in assorted berries, ants, insects, butterflies and what look like embryonic birds. The field guides do not mention that they predate nests. However, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology has a terrific description of this fascinating bird, "The Lewis's Woodpecker might have woodpecker in its name, but it forages like a flycatcher and flies like a crow. It has a color palette all its own, with a pink belly, gray collar, and dark green back unlike any other member of its family. From bare branches and posts, it grabs insects in midair, flying with slow and deep wingbeats. It calls open pine forests, woodlands, and burned forests home, but it often wanders around nomadically outside of the breeding season in search of nuts.”
