Now that we’ve discussed Tire Pressures 101 (yesterday’s posts. Go check them out), it’s time to move up to 201... Ambient Temperatures and Pressures. As said before, I have a tire pressure guide on my highlights section of my page. This guide is a good starting point for when the weather is perfect. If it’s the dog days of summer (now in California) it’s prob much hotter than perfect, so those pressures will prob get the tires greasy (tire gets too hot). To fix this, add 1-2 psi. This will drop the operating temperature of the tire back into the ideal temp. If it still feels greasy, add another 1-2 psi and see how it feels. The opposite is true for colder weather. The base pressures may not produce enough heat in the tires. If it feels like you don’t have much grip (sliding a bit), drop pressures. This will give a bigger contact patch which will also generate more friction/heat. The tricky part here is if you have to drop the pressures too much, you will now feel like the tires are under inflated and will handle like crap. You will have to find a good compromise, but ultimately may have to drop your pace given that handling isn’t ideal/safe. Same could apply for hotter conditions. It’s always about trying small changes in pressures and see how that affects handling.

Overinflated tires are no bueno. Having too high tire pressure will lessen your contact patch. Basically, you’re riding on a knife’s edge from loosing grip. You’ll know if you’re tires are too high if at turn in, it feels like the bike is falling in too quickly. I also get this feeling at lean like the front tire is at the very edge of its grip. If the rear is over inflated, it will typically break traction under acceleration out of a turn much easier. While running higher pressure (~38psi or greater) is better for tire life while commuting, it’s a terrible idea for canyon/track/aggressive riding. Just like I suggested for low pressure... inflate your tires 3-4psi lower and ride 50% to see the difference in steering. Understanding how differently a bike handles at less than ideal tire pressure could alert you when you take off on a ride, and could be the difference between riding safely and crashing. Tag your friends, get educated, and do everything to prolong your riding life. ✌🏼

Low tire pressure isn’t ideal for several reasons. It will cause your tire to have a bigger contact patch, but it will also decrease handling. Like many have said in my previous post, it feels like you have a flat. Steering is difficult and slow. Another negative is that the tire will increase in temperature, possibly causing the tire to wear faster, and get “greasy” in hot weather. If you’ve ever snowboarded or skied in slushy conditions, it’ll feel similar to that. The bike will feel like it’s moving around slightly because of the flexing tires instead of feeling like your solidly railing through a turn. If you’d like to try, drop your tire pressure 3-4 psi and ride around at 50% of your ability (to keep from crashing). You will still feel the difference in handling. Make sure you already have ideal pressure for the twisties before you drop them down. I have a tire pressure guide on my highlights. Stay tuned because I’ll post why having high pressures is worse than under inflated tires in a couple of hours. 👍🏼

Can you tell when your tire pressure is off??? 🤔 Do you know what it feels like when it’s too low? How about too high? Today I’m going to post with each situation and discuss how it feels, and why it’s bad. IG’s algorithm sucks and won’t always show my posts in your feed, so either check back on my page, and while you’re at it, subscribe so you won’t miss vital information that could both educate you, and save your life!!! Tag riders you know would appreciate the information too!

Almost dragging ass, but that Saddlemen GP-V1 is keeping me planted right where I belong! Love how comfy and trick my seat is. Never knew how good cornering could feel when my butt isn’t sliding along the slick stock vinyl seat. Who else has one???

It felt so good flying around Malibu yesterday. I didn’t even realize it was my first day shredding hard since my Pete Rose accident. You def have to have that easy to forget mindset when it comes to scary crashes. Get back in the saddle as soon as possible, and start feeling one with the bike again. Are you that type of rider??

Pretty damn good for a UFC fighter!!! I got to hang with my new friend @groovylando at the snake yesterday. Check out the second pic of how Lando was naturally riding. Would you believe that he was dragging knee only a few minutes after that pic?! Goes to show that having experience in other sport disciplines REALLY helps you as a rider. I didn’t tell Lando before we went for a ride, but my whole goal was to 1. Help make him a safer rider and 2. Get him to drag knee because I knew an athlete of his caliper would take information and execute. Well done bro!!!! Check out @groovylando’s feed and follow his journey in one of the most challenging sports out there... MMA
