Jinjo @jinjosg - HOSTED TASTING - With their (Les Amis Group) ever expanding portfolio of restaurants come Jinjo, a sumiyaki which serves contemporary Japanese food spanning from yakitori to charcoal grill and uses seasonal ingredients to do so. 💮 . Not all izakaya have the confidence to offer Hatsu (💵S$6) Chicken Heart in their menu, the chewy and crunchy morsels have a comfortable amount of fats which offset the small amount of funkiness. . . The Satsuma-Imo (💵S$20) Chiba Sweet potato was indeed a little eye opener, firstly for its price tag and secondly is how good it was. It had a texture of a purée, mildly sweet and fragrant. . Smear it with the butter it comes with and you have a dish that’s worth coming back for, if you have spare $20 of cash to splurge on sweet potatoes that is. . . Jinjo source the best quality sweet potato from different prefectures in Japan according to the season, thus the price tag buts there’s also Don Don Don Ki around, one have to experience to compare. . . All the components goes so very well with each other, especially the pickled daikon, absolutely delicious. . . Topped with grated yama wasabi and house-made tare which makes it even mouthwatering. Served with shoestring truffle fries. The pork is sourced from Salmon Creek Farms Natural Pork, raised in the USA with Duroc boars and “White line” (Lance, Chester White, Yorkshire Cross) sows. . . These free range pigs were never fed hormones, antibiotics or animal proteins. USDA process verified. The Naked Finn and it’s Sister restaurant Nekkid always have the highest respect for the produce and source the best products. . . .

The photo doesn’t do the dessert justice but trust me just this once and take the leap of faith to order this “Fu*ck it’s Delicious” dessert. . . It doesn’t give you diabetes like how the other puddings do, the pudding pairs so damn well with the Dulce de Leche custard, cashew brittle and espresso agar each providing different textures but the wow factor came from the brilliance of adding salt. Slam dunk dude. . . .

But this should be the benchmark for all laksa, the most consistent and reliable bowl. It’s genius that the noodles was cut short enough that it fits onto the spoon with all the other ingredients and the gravy. . . The gravy and texture has a nice balance of coconut milk, dried shrimps, chili and laksa leaves. Ask for the packet sambal, it’s essential. It could’ve been a little more spicy though. The otah is a must order. . . .

The pickled mushrooms was a little turn off as it has a lingering tastes that’s a tad too sweet. Standard hummus, go to either Artichoke or Pita Bakery for the best hummus. . . The almond dukkha isn’t pronounced enough, although the portobello mushroom brings the umami earthiness. However, the toasted grain toast was soggy due to it being placed under the humongous portobello. If you ain’t a vegan, order something else. . . .

The only downside is that it’s not cheesy enough. Their Double Cheese Cake (💵S$7.50/slice, 💵S$23.50 for 12cm Cake) will fare better if you prefer your cake to be more cheesy. . Definitely get their freshly baked financiers whenever you have a chance, there’s just something comforting about having a fresh, warm, moist and buttery pastry. The matcha and chocolate flavours are good, original is the best. . . .

Tendon Itsuki - Special Tendon (💵S$13.90) Prawns 2pcs, Chicken Breast 2pcs, Tempura Onsen Tamago, Vegetables 4pcs. 🥢 • ACAMASEATS & GTK💮: The days of tendon are pretty much over, with the standards of Kohaku and Itsuki dropping it’s almost horrendous. In its early glory days, they’re the powerhouse that started the tendon craze but it doesn’t live up to the hype anymore. If you are looking for a standard no frills tendon, here will be the best you can get. . . The Tempura remains greasy, at times it even the rice can be a little oily and the stench of oil in the restaurant doesn’t help as well. Luckily their chicken breast are still juicy, plump fresh prawns and thank God the yolk of the Tempura Onsen egg still flows. . . No idea why is there still a line outside, maybe it’s the affordable price tag or the charm of the Keisuke brand but what I know for sure is that it’ll take me eons to queue for it again even if the set comes with chawanmushi and miso soup. . . .

It ain’t easy making these cakes due to the different temperatures, ice creams/sorbets and ingredients used but Apiary has pulled it off nonetheless. . Get all the components in a spoonful for the full experience, the creaminess of the coconut ice cream and Italian meringue compliments the fruit sorbets extremely well with the almond dacquoise giving it a different texture and a nutty flavour. . . There’s another plated dessert called “Bali Starling Eggs” specially crafted to create awareness for an endangered species of bird. Keep a lookout! . . .

I like fact that they halved the prawns for the ease of your consumption. . This is a place where I’d visit once and strike it off my list, I’d visit again whenever I’m nearby and have a craving for reliable prawn mee. Due to the fact that there’s better prawn mee in town with cheaper price tags. . . .

Pretty much the same case here. . . Thought the plating is beautiful and yes we do eat with our eyes first which makes one anticipate even more. However the donut is a little tough and dry, got excited about the crushed Tim Tam’s but can’t taste anything maybe it’s crushed that’s why but what’s the point, the ice cream, normal. The service is good though. . . .

Da Shi Jia 大食家大大大虾面 @dashijiabigprawnmee - Wok Fried Big Prawn White Bee Hoon 大食家炒大虾白米粉 (💵S$16.80) 🥢 • ACAMASEATS & GTK💮: Will you pay S$16.80 for a plate of wok fried bee hoon, even if it’s by the next gen hawkers, in a comfortable air con setting, when you can get a plate at S$3 in a food court/kopitiam? Some might be willing if that plate is truly more superior in the department of taste and quality of ingredients used. . . For this particular plate, the bee hoon is first fried in the wok to archive “wok hei” - breath/essence of the wok, then a generous helping of prawn stock and lastly to intensify the flavour, crispy pork lard. However, the wok hei and umami isn’t that distinctive during my visit. . . What I love about this dish is the accompanying sauce that’s made of (my Guess is) Yuzukusho and a particular spice/chili. The combination of that and the fried bee hoon had me at the “Holy F*ck I almost said it’s delicious” moment. I like it that even though it’s ‘dry’, it’s still have enough sauce but it lacks a little oomph. . . .

Once again, the garlic is exquisitely done. Soft, fragrant and sweet the little knobs of garlic provides an arousing pungent flavour that compliments the overall dish. . . . ’atar

The Sweet and savoury notes are perfectly balanced by the coke and sherry vinegar resulting in a sticky almost gooey glaze. The marbling of the pork is stunning, sinful but so worth it, that’s where the flavour is and the accompanying shallots... amazing, almost life changing as it melts in your mouth. . . Mop up the remaining sauce with their kickass Turkish Bread (💵S$4.5) it’ll be a sin to let it go to waste. . . .

Their new menu has renewed my passion and appreciation for bagels. Go down early, preferably before 3pm, cos they serve limited bagels per day people. . . Each component pairs simultaneously well together, you can’t go wrong with classic combinations. It’ll get messy, bits and pieces will fall while you’re devouring it, juices will flow and it’s a challenge to keep it all together but it’s all damn well worth the effort. Don’t even try to eat it elegantly, table manners don’t belong here, bagels & coffee, baby. . . .

Tendon Ginza Itsuki - Vegetable Tendon 天丼 (💵S$12.90) Pumpkin, Shiitake Mushroom, Lotus Root, Eggplant and Four pieces of various vegetables. 🥄 • ACAMASEATS & GTK💮: There are a number of Tempura Donduri 天ぷら丼ぶりspecialty shops in town but Tendon Itsuki still commands long lines of patrons outside their shop even after a few years of operation. However, it ain’t as fantastic as I recall. . . Out of all those primary vegetables featured, it’s the rotating vegetables that stole the limelight, particularly the shiso leaf, the rest was basic at best. After a few tempura, you might get sick of it due to the oiliness and smell, so pair it with the tendon sauce and rice. Will I ever have tendon again? Yes but not here. . . .

It’s not common to find rose ice cream in town but Apiary has pulled it off brilliantly. . . The raspberry and lychee sorbet brings sweetness with goes in harmony with the fragrant floral notes from the rose ice cream. Eat all the components together in a scoop with the almond dacquoise for the full experience. Certainly a perfect dessert for the upcoming Mother’s Day. . . .
