In the first class I taught this morning I was doing a warrior 2 off my mat and my foot slipped in sweat on the floor out from under me and I tore my right hamstring. So now I have a matching one to my left which I tore almost two years ago. 🙈🙈 lesson to learn here- thou shall not warrior 2 off the mat in a hot yoga class before checking for sweat puddles?? 🙄🤬

Oftentimes you hear reminders to “listen to your body”. Usually it’s in reference to your physical health, like eating intuitively or getting more sleep. This past week, however, I learned a new spin on this important life lesson. . I haven’t been able to sleep for days. I just lay awake each night, watching the hours tick by until it’s 4 am and the sun’s threatening to rise. It’s been maddening. Usually I turn to my phone and try to drain my energy by mindlessly scrolling through websites, but even that wasn’t working. (Terrible habit, by the way!) . And then it hit me. My body was restless. My mind was alert with all sorts of things I wanted to check off my to-do lists; and this time, all the things I was aching to get done had the single purpose of easing my daily workload. . Long chunks of uninterrupted time are hard to come by when you’re raising a child from home. And while I wouldn’t have it any other way, it’s been difficult to learn to balance this stage of my life, when both my career and housework are forced into uncertain time blocks between feedings, diaper changes, and all the mandatory happy cuddles with my baby boy. . I couldn’t sleep because my body was craving a stress-free environment to wake up to. I needed to catch up on everything I had put off, and everything that was nagging me in the back of my mind, without any interruptions. . So, wide awake at 5:00 am, I put away my phone and cleaned like a madwoman. And did laundry. And rearranged my entire office. And hummed to myself and watched the sunrise. . It. Was. GLORIOUS. It was the first time in what felt like ages that I was able to tackle all my put-off to-do’s uninterrupted, with only my thoughts as company. It was just me, myself, and I. And I woke up the following day feeling lighter than I have in weeks. I was able to happily focus on my family and work, and nothing more. I felt productive and accomplished, and ready to work harder. . It’s easy to forget to take care of yourself—to connect to yourself—both physically AND mentally. You will be the best version of yourself and in the best position to care for others when you listen to that voice in your head. . What do you need? Listen.
