Bursts of light twined through the hedgerow. I think the name ‘traveller’s joy’ fits this plant so much better than ‘old man’s beard’ at this time of year. • Stories from our family woodland - link in profile

‪This pretty plant isn’t often seen but with the reduced mowing (due to drought) this field bindweed has spread its wings... Convolvulus arvensis I believe, hidden away by ye olde walled garden.. #wildflowerhour ‬

My orchid post for this week here on #wildflowerhour concerns one of our smallest, most subtle and delicate native orchids of all - the shy and retiring Bog Orchid. Lovers of wet, acid places, they're quite unlike the other orchids in that their flowers are hyper-resupinate, or twisted around a full 360 degrees. (Our other orchids have flowers that are resupinate - that is, with ovaries twisted around 180 degrees so the flowers are all, effectively, upside down). Why have Bog Orchids bothered to turn their flowers right back around? I've no idea! But I do know each flower looks like a small green angel, and I love them for it.
