#unitedfarmworkers strike in 1974. I'm so inspired by these Filipino and Mexico workers who took a stand together here in California. I got to see these photos by on display at @oaklandasiancc The power in this image for me lies in the garments worn. The hat and face covering serve as an armor while their flag of resistance makes their sword. ✊🏼🗡️🇵🇭

César Chávez was the co-founder of the United Farm Workers and one of the most revered union organizers in US history. Chávez helped bring to light the exploitative and dangerous working conditions of California farmworkers. Through strikes, boycotts, and public protest, the UFW exposed the terrible health effects of working and being sprayed with harmful pesticides, including high rates of cancer and birth defects in children. ⠀ ⠀ Over several decades, Chávez led thousands of Mexican and Filipino farmworkers in nonviolent protest, winning national awareness and support for their struggle. By the late 1970s, the UFW consisted of 50,000 field workers and had reached a landmark collective bargaining agreement with growers. To this day, César Chávez continues to be an inspiration and folk hero for many Latinxs and advocates of social justice.

Some clips alongside a peek into initial line work before colouring, for my animation for @topicstories about Dolores Huerta. Naturally I chose the animation to be around the metaphor of leaves which meant a lot of leaf animating, but I drew guides to help guide where I wanted the leaf flurry to go which made it a lot easier!
