New poetry! Really looking forward to @deanatta's book as I look forward to/prepare for the upcoming Bookie Slam as part of the @margatebookie, and NSWEW by @oceanvuong which won the T.S. Eliot prize in 2017 (previously won by one of my favourite poetry collections of all time, Stag's Leap), has been piquing my interest for a while...🤔 Since I'm here - reading a few poems later at @bramleysbar at the Bramley's open mic hosted by @kman_143, including my latest poem, 'Letters to the Editor', which has never been read before. Hope to see u there 😉🎤. • • • #tseliotprize

Get yourself a copy of Sharon Olds' beautiful 2012 poem sequence, 'Stag's Leap'. Thank me later. If you trust reviews, this is a good one: https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/books/2012/oct/21/stags-leap-sharon-olds-review #tseliotprize

I have been reading a lot of poetry recently, partially because I haven’t had time to read a lot of novels, and partially because I have been on a real roll of finding great new poetry collections. Since reading Hera Lindsay Bird’s self-titled collection earlier this year, I have been really in the mood for more irreverent poetry that is FUN and after seeing some of Caroline Bird's poems quoted on Twitter, I was drawn to this collection. Since @carcanetpress rebranded their collections in the past year or so, I have been buying more and more from them. The covers look so modern now, and I am loving the new matte feel of the books. • Well, where to start. There are so many great moments in this collection. The way Bird uses voices is phenomenal and there is a real sense of anxious energy running through these poems. 'Sentinel of Anything' is a particularly excellent example of this, and I really loved the title poem. This is a collection you can drop in and out of, and doesn’t seem to require any understanding of fancy pants context (my favourite type of poetry!) • I came to this collection without any knowledge of the poet, and I suppose it is pertinent to note that in the promo interviews for this collection, she spoke about time spent in a rehabilitation centre- and I do think you can certainly view the poems through that lens, but to be honest, I enjoyed them just as much before I had this information, which is testament to how wonderful they are! I loved their nervy confidence and how they leapt from weird world to weird world. This is the best kind of poetry and I am so happy to have discovered another fantastic poet. • #tseliotprize

Amazing & fulfilling to be part of events that do more than feature me & my bars, but also feature you and your artform, them and theirs too ✊🏾❤️✌🏽🌞 So many artists activists educators parents & students collabbed to make this event the empowering platform it's meant to be. Just to thank a few @knewmanscott @sarahannpelly @sageseeker0u @ariaztro @davborski @ageintobeauty @constanz_a @youmedia_gabbie @youmediahpl @hplct @the_zulynette @versatilepoetiq @khamarihamblin14 @dezigottalent and our keynote artist-educator-activist-speaker-poet 🙏🏾 Coming back from tour in Russia, I lost my copy of "Citizen: An American Lyric" on the plane. The 1st thing I did when I landed was buy a new copy! 3 of the most powerful excerpts I based my rapoetry interpretation on were 1. The trauma expert who was traumatized to see the esteemed client she's been meeting on the phone was actually... 😲 A Black Woman 😲 2. The Catholic school teacher who never figured out the white girl was cheating off Claudia's paper because... she could only conceive of the Black Girl being the one who'd need to turn around and peek at the white girl's page. 3. Wozniacki's mocking of Serena's body and shock that anyone was offended by it. To see Claudia present these in person was like seeing a great book become a great movie... but better! During the intro I spoke about the community impact & involvement of the BigRead & Citizen & Claudia, Shared my favorite poem, spoke about the relevance of youth voices, and - MOST IMPORTANT - about the microaggressions WE COMMIT against our own friends, family, colleagues, students, teachers, and loved ones every day, unwittingly, due to our conditioning 😲 In recognizing our own unintended offenses, we recognize how to walk with those who offend us TO A BETTER PLACE, rather than just "put them in their place" 🌞 ••• ••• #tseliotprize (@bostonglobe @latimes @npr) 🏆❤️

Picture: , , Feb'16 Kissing in (thơ Việt ở dưới) My grandmother kisses as if bombs are bursting in the backyard, where mint and jasmine lace their perfumes through the kitchen window, as if somewhere, a body is falling apart and flames are making their way back through the intricacies of a young boy’s thigh, as if to walk out the door, your torso would dance from exit wounds. When my grandmother kisses, there would be no flashy smooching, no western music of pursed lips, she kisses as if to breathe you inside her, nose pressed to cheek so that your scent is relearned and your sweat pearls into drops of gold inside her lungs, as if while she holds you death also, is clutching your wrist. My grandmother kisses as if history never ended, as if somewhere a body is still falling apart. Disappointment, 2018 “In the body, where everything has a price, I was a beggar. On my knees, I watched, through the keyhole, not the man showering, but rain falling through him: guitar strings snapping over his globed shoulders. He was singing, which is why I remember it. His voice - it filled me to the core like a skeleton. Even my name knelt down inside me, asking to be spared. He was singing. It was all I remember. For in the body, where everything has a price, I was alive. I didn’t know there was a better reason. That one morning, my father would stop - a dark colt paused in downpour - & listen for my clutched breath behind the door. I didn’t know the cost of entering a song - was to lose your way back. So I entered. So I lost. I lost it all with my eyes wide open.” (Threshold by ) #tseliotprize 📸 @h.kisielewski @e_artsprojects with @jeanjacquesvetere @klaraschumann @god.herself @lucreziadefazio @sexy_buggery

Congratulations to this years TS Eliot Prize winner Ocean Vuong, who has won the coveted award with his first book of poetry Night Sky with Exit Wounds. Born in Vietnam, Vuong spent the first year of his life in a refugee camp in the Philippines before his parents moved the family of seven to Connecticut. Having only first read poetry at the age of 19 Vuong has described his writing career as “one long accident”. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/books/authors/ts-eliot-prize-winner-ocean-vuong-crisis-poetry-always/ @oceanvuong prize @telegraph
