S’mores in science class? 🍫 Being able to write clear procedures in science is a thought task! After a few tries, these fifth graders started to get the hang of things! It took their wacky teacher making a mess multiple times while following their unclear instructions to make things sink in. Thank you @elementaryshenanigans for the awesome idea! A great way to start our first module on the nature of science! #science

@arcticwfff with @get_repost ・・・ Go with the floe! Because of the salinity (salt concentration) of the ocean, ice won’t form until the water reaches -1.8 degrees Celsius (28.8 degrees Fahrenheit!) The Arctic is more likely to have multi-year sea ice than the Antarctic because while Antarctic sea ice tends to drift into warmer waters and melt, much of Arctic sea ice is land-locked! #science @woodshole_ocean @uafairbanks @nsfgov @universityofri @uofwa

At long last, a little preview of what I’ve been working on for the @pgmuseum! Consider it more of a hint that anything. Three little bird icons - California Quail, Mallard, and Western Grebe. #science

When it comes to preserving muscle mass, everyone has this notion that muscle breakdown oc" at Sunshine Coast, Queensland - 1850397664405353495

BCAA's should you use them? 〰 When it comes to preserving muscle mass, everyone has this notion that muscle breakdown occurs simultaneously when you work out but it's not that quick and muscle break down only occurs when there is no other immediate fuel in the body to use! So if you are eating an adequate diet pre and post workout there is really no need for bcaas. 〰 If you are aiming for fat loss, stop taking BCAA's! Your body uses the branch chains as fuel instead of the food you ate or your bodily fat. Here's where the broscience people chime in and go nah ah bcaas are protein so your body won't use them as fuel. Wrong. Bcaas are not the same as a complex protein structure and are easily broken down through gluconeogensis to provide glucose! Specifically valine and isoleucine as these compounds are glucogenic. So if you are someone sipping on bcaas all day to preserve your muscle, you are just trickling in fuel all day despite the little nutrition label that says 5 cals per serve. 〰 Should anyone take BCAA's? If you are already super lean body fat and trying to build muscle, or an ectomorph who struggles to put on weight, then I would suggest Bcaas. Otherwise save your money, eat adequate protein, have an adequate calorie deficit and exercise however you like. Keep it simple 👌🏻👌🏻

What if corn could fertilizer itself? A variety in Mexico may hold the key to self fertilization and may have been doing so for thousands of years. In Oaxaca, Mexico giant 16 foot cornstalks have been grown by farmers to years. A US based research team wanted to know how these giants existed since the local soil was not nitrogen dense. The corn plants produce an above ground root covered in Mucus which allows for bacteria to live in. The bacteria take naturally occurring nitrogen from the atmosphere and transform it into a form that the corn plant can use to grow larger and create a larger yield. The corn plants are specially adapted to Mexico and it may take a couple of years for scientists to crossbreed the trait into other varieties but if successful it could change the face of agriculture. Fertilizer costs would be virtually eliminated and farmers yields could potentially double if used efficiently which could provide enough food to feed the world while making a smaller impact.
