Today is the international day of the world’s indigenous peoples. It also marks 15 months since over 250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders resolved the Uluru Statement from the Heart. This called for the establishment of a constitutionally enshrined “First Nations Voice” which would speak into Parliament and the establishment of a Commission which would lay the foundation for a Treaty between Federal and State Governments and the First Nations. Although the Federal Government rejected the Uluru Statement, it remains a significant document that continues to drive forward the conversation about constitutional recognition of First Nations in Australia. This photo features the panellists who presented at a seminar we attended earlier this year on this topic. Former WA Chief Justice Wayne Martin, Associate Professor Sarah Murray, Dr Ambelin Kwaymullina and Professor Megan Davis - who are all holding the Uluru Statement. law

@glblctzn (@get_repost) ・・・ This is a huge win for human rights. Currently, prisoners in New York City must pay about a full day's wages to make a 10-minute phone call. After the law goes into effect, they will be able to make calls to lawyers and loved ones free of charge. Campaigners are hailing the new law not only as a huge win for human rights, but also as a victory against industries that profit from prisoners. Read more at the link in our bio. law

. Civil Rights and Environmental Attorney from Iran 🇮🇷 was summoned for arrest for the “high crime” of defending environmentalists against the oppressive authoritarian fascist regime tribunal. Authoritarian societies attack the citizen judiciary to maintain power. This cannot stand. Democracy is fragile and must be fought for and protected @centerforhumanrights ・・・ Iranian attorney Mostafa Tork Hamadani has been charged for criticizing the judiciary for barring him and other defense lawyers from defending environmentalists who were arrested by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Hamadani, who has taken on several human rights cases throughout his career, tweeted a copy of his summons document on July 26, 2018, adding:⠀ ⠀ “I was summoned to the Culture and Media Court based on a complaint by Tehran’s deputy prosecutor who accused me of spreading falsehoods. The reasons given in the complaint are my tweets about the late Seyed-Emami and the Note to Article 48 regarding the prohibition on lawyers against representing detained environmentalists. The investigator was polite and I hope my defense will be accepted. All my efforts are aimed at improving the climate for lawyers to defend the accused.”⠀ ⠀ Law

One of Iran’s most prominent human rights lawyers, Abdolfattah Soltani, was granted furlough from Evin Prison to mourn his daughter’s death on August 4, 2018. Soltani’s 30-year-old daughter, Homa, had passed away on August 3 from a heart attack. It is not clear how long Soltani will be allowed to stay on furlough. On August 5, his lawyer Saeed Dehghan called on President Hassan Rouhani to seek Soltani’s release.⠀ ⠀ Soltani, 64, has been eligible for release since 2014 but the Intelligence Ministry, which operates under Rouhani, has blocked his freedom despite Soltani’s deteriorating health, according to his surviving daughter, Maede. "They don’t want him to go free only because he insists on his rights and innocence,” she told CHRI in September 2017. “The judiciary isn’t impartial or independent. The real decision-maker is the Intelligence Ministry."⠀ ⠀ Law
