Differences between sprint start and skate start . 🏃🏾 Sprinters invert their heel before their foot touches the ground in a sprint start. As the foot pushes through the ground, the heel everts, and shin rotates medially/internally. . 🏒 Skaters cannot rotate the blades of their skates, so they must avoid everting the heel at push-off. Because they cannot use rotation of the lower leg, it’s impossible for them to develop subsequent medial rotation, needed for push off. So, to direct sufficient force to push off, they must begin by rotating the hip strongly laterally (external rotation) so that the knee is pointing further outward during the first part of the start that is customary for a runner. . 🙌🏽 Love the idea of analysis of mechanics of different sport to customize training to the sports needs. This is another reason why individual assessment is 🔑 🥅 In a hockey player, I would check for adequate ankle range, and ability to invert and evert, adequate ankle dorsiflexion and ability to “roll over” on ankle, knee rotation (or lack thereof likely in knee medial rotation), and adequate hip internal rotation. Little checks like this could help with the athletes joint longevity, general mobility and health, and subsequently ability to perform for more years in their athletic career. . .
