Adopting a regular breathing practice. Ok so I know we all have a regular breathing practice otherwise you wouldn't be reading this! I am talking about breathing correctly. Many of us breathe quickly and mainly in the chest area, this is especially true if you are suffering from anxiety. But breathing deeply and slowly can have profound effects on the body and can instantly change your state from anxious to calm. This breathing practice will activate the parasympathetic response, instantly soothing and calming the mind as well as the body. I learnt 6, 6 breathing or coherent breathing or 5 breaths per minute breathing a few years ago from my yoga nidra teacher. I was astounded how powerful the technique was and still is for me. It really can change your state of mind and it is free and simple. The idea is to take 5 breaths per minute which equates to breathing in for 6 seconds and out for 6 seconds. If breathing exercises are not part of your daily practice you may have to build up to 5 breaths a minute. Wherever you start is fine, and with practice you can achieve 5 breaths per minute. All you need to do is sit or lie down comfortably. Close your eyes and place your hands on your belly. When you breathe in your belly should rise and when you breathe out your belly should fall. You want to breathe into your belly. So relax your shoulders and breathe in to the count of 6, pause, then breathe out to the count of 6, pause and repeat. Try and work your way to doing this for 10 to 20 mins a day to feel the benefit. Happy breathing! #healing
