Last weekend I was catching some vitamin D in the sun ☀️😎 but what does “catching some vitamin D” even mean?? 🤔 . . . It seems like “vitamin D” is actually a bit of an umbrella ☂ term used by the media to reference something that is just kinda.. good for your health 🤷🏻‍♂️ . In reality, vitamin D is a hormone pre-cursor that your body uses for bone and calcium metabolism, keeping the immune system strong, and as an anti-inflammatory 🤩 . There are several forms of vitamin D in the body, and they serve different purposes. . . . You can acquire vitamin D from the environment in two forms: ergocalciferol, or “vitamin D2”, from plants 🌱 and fish 🐟, or cholecalciferol, or “vitamin D3”, synthesised in your skin using the rays from Mr. Sun 💪🌞 . . . Vitamin D3 manufacture in your skin works by using ultraviolet B rays. These UVB rays are only present when the sun is nice and strong or at high altitudes - they can’t penetrate the clouds, and aren’t very strong in the winter months (so you won’t get any vitamin D from the sun during winter ❄️.. sorry! 🤷🏻‍♂️ ). A molecule in your skin called 7-dehydrocholesterol, is converted into vitamin D3 when it is exposed to UVB rays, and is then taken to the liver. . . . Why is this important? Well, once your liver has plenty of vitamin D3 and vitamin D2, it converts the vitamin into an inactive 😴 form, and then sends this to the kidneys, the skin, white blood cells, and the bones, which convert it into an active 🕺 form. . . . Once active, vitamin D can be involved in all sorts of metabolic processes which maintain your health 🍏 . We are now starting to understand that vitamin D is needed for proper function of the heart 💓, brain 🧠, and muscles 💪, which might explain why deficiency in vitamin D is associated with so many diseases. Its main function however, is regulating calcium 🥛 levels in the blood, which is important to the physiology and health of your bones 💀 .
