This bio-drama covers the foundation of the National Lampoon magazine and its founders Henry Beard and more importantly Doug Kenney. First off this is a quite basic film on the whole from the shouting style through to the episodic nature of the supporting cast. But I knew nothing of Kenney’s story and personally I found the film a tasteful and emotional introduction to his story. Forte is perfectly cast in the role and it gives him a nice change of gear after playing Tandy in The Last Man on Earth. Small it may be but the story resonates deeply. 11/52: A Futile & Stupid Gesture (2018) - ★★★. - I'm totally fresh to the story of Doug Kenney and the National Lampoon, but have always been interested in editorial humour similar to what he was doing so was a good fit. The weaving of SNL with the Lampoon was also really interesting for me. I also dig Will Forte so I was sold. A very entertainingly told story, if a bit disjointed. No proper laugh out loud moments for me, but lots of sizzler one-liners that I thoroughly enjoyed. The (apparent) attitude of the Lampoon was one thing that was consistently applied the the film's scenes throughout, disregarding the idea of being polite and/or inoffensive to anyone, even its creator. Which was enjoyable. - #dougkenney

Essentially the greatest to have been released in history, ’s opened years ago to this day & still holds up, no doubt thanks to an assured crew (made up of talent like , & director ) & perfect casting: in one of his signature roles alongside & . would set the standard for college comedies in ways that many of the genre use today: levelheaded yet moderately free spirited party animals, a smarmy & detestable ass kissing villain (or group) & an intolerant dean (iconically played by ). AH focuses Faber College, a New England school that has the obnoxious, party loving Delta House, a ragtag frat house who throw big parties, screw around & go through beer like fish with water. Dean Wormer (Vernon) is an irrepressible tight ass dead set on ridding the campus of them & with the aid of the overprivileged & abrasive Omega House, they plot to rid the campus of Delta by whatever means necessary. Toss in a lot of one liners, a go for broke cartoon-like Belushi as overgrown frat boy Bluto (who inspires some of the best moments from saying “I’m a zit: get it?” after he spits out donut at some Omegas to a food fight to the film’s climax of a parade gone horrendously wrong (with Belushi front & center as a pirate) to a horse the boys drag into the dean’s office to the iconic toga party. AH plays up the college moments for maximum comic effect & one of my favorite comedies. I remembered seeing it on back in the 90s & laughing but imagine getting the uncensored VHS & going to town on the laughter & more. I’d encourage any fan to check out ’s , which dramatizes the life of comedy writing wunderkind #DougKenney who cofounded the Lampoon & co-wrote this film (which he appears as a Delta) & on Netflix, a doc about the history of the Lampoon & its progression to filmmaking. Aside, AH is an enduring & a must watch for anyone needing a laugh. DAY 60

“We’re All Gonna Get Flayed” Ink on layered wood panels On this date back in 1980, “Caddyshack” was released, written by the late, great Douglas Kenney (subject of an amazing documentary currently on Netflix, titled “A Futile and Stupid Gesture” & brilliantly portrayed by both Will Forte and Martin Mull, but I digress). Less of a coherent narrative & more of a shitload of funny people in a series of hilarious scenes, Caddyshack also solidified the soundtrack prowess of yacht-rock staple Kenny Loggins into the American consciousness. Indeed, I’m all right. Anyhoo....this piece also transposes my love for Rodney Dangerfield and Game of Thrones’ Bolton clan, for not much more reason than a vehicle for a bad pun. But hey, why you got to give me advice? Why don’t you just let it be. #dougkenney

There are films & then there are films: ones that can’t be remade/rebooted in any way. I’m talking greatness achieved here: Godfather, Casablanca, Shawshank Redemption. The list is endless. (released 7/80, the year of my birth) firmly belongs on that list, given its cast of proven comic talent in , , & , its first time director (who left us with Egon Spengler, National Lampoon’s Vacation & Groundhog Day) & it’s simple premise: people clash at a : slobs vs. slobs. CK is a , providing just the right blend of sharply constructed performances from its cast to its airtight script by alum like Ramos, & #DougKenney (whose life & this film are excellently dramatized in the biopic ). Every single thing about CK is absolute perfection, with each character perfectly established by their introductory scene: Murray’s oddball groundskeeper ogling older club members; Dangerfield’s ultra obnoxious developer criticizing an ugly hat right in full view of later enemy Judge Smails (Knight, easily playing one of the best comic villains I’ve ever watched) to Chase’s oddly detached free spirit golfer who might be a cross between zen master & total bullshitter. I’ve seen this movie countless times & never get sick of it, given its consistency for laughter. It’s difficult to make a comedy, it’s impossible to make but Ramis & company do it here in a way that it feels concentrated yet pure, none of the laughs are forced or the scenes loose. There’s a firm hand on a film that presents itself as loose. That’s the surprise to this movie that makes it virtually . DAY 31
