This morning, I attended a political event sponsored by the Sacramento chapter of United Latinos. Dolores Huerta dropped by to participate in the political discussions. She was very kind, and agreed on the spot to do two Facebook Live videos: one on why it is important to vote this November in the Midterm elections; and the other, in Spanish, on why it is important to be counted in the 2020 Census. http://www.UnitedLatinos.org/ #DoloresHuerta

“And remember to always honor those who work with their hands — the laborers, the farmers.” - Dolores Huerta. Meeting her was so surreal because as young organizers, we would constantly speak about her. We would tell and re-tell the stories of the United Farmworkers Movement, and close every community circle with the unity clap—reciting the same words she and her comrades did as they rose up. Can you imagine building a movement that decades later 18 year old college students would mention every single time they closed community with nothing but love? All I could say to her was, “Thank you for everything you’ve done for us.” What else do you say to a mountain of a woman?

Erin Currier, "Dolores Huerta (As Van Gogh's Gardener)", acrylic and mixed media on panel, 24"h x 18"w . . Dolores Huerta is a civil rights activist, labor leader, and mother of eleven children who cofounded the United Farm Workers along with César Chávez. Early on Huerta had earned a teaching degree, however she left the education field to instead devote her life to combatting economic injustice: “I couldn't tolerate seeing kids come to class hungry and needing shoes. I thought I could do more by organizing farm workers than by trying to teach their hungry children.” She was the lead negotiator in the worker’s contract created after the successful Delano Grape Strike in 1965. Since then, Huerta, originator of the phrase “Sí, se puede,” has organized and advocated tirelessly for workers’, immigrants’, and womens’ rights. She has been beaten within an inch of her life by police while protesting peacefully, and jailed; she has also received numerous awards for her courage and service, including the Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Human Rights and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was the first Latina inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1993. I chose to pay homage to Dolores Huerta, a personal hero of mine whom I had the profound honor and pleasure of welcoming to my studio last summer, in the style, composition, and palette of one of my favorite artists, Vincent Van Gogh. In Dolores Huerta as Van Gogh’s Gardener I have replicated Van Gogh’s brushstrokes through the use of tiny strips of empty seed packets, produce wrappings from Bolivia and Ecuador, matchbooks and gum wrappers from Chile and Argentina, and medicinal plant packaging from Japan, Hong Kong, and Laos. I have also collaged actual postcards from the premiere of Dolores, the recent documentary about Huerta’s life and work, as well as a club card found on the ground on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, a torn page about Santa Rosa de Lima found on the streets of Cusco, and other ephemera that viewers may discover for themselves. . . #doloreshuerta
