Sketchbook drawing I did for one of the three best classic horror remakes, starting with the Thing (‘84), the Fly (‘86) and ending with the Blob (‘88)—and maybe a fourth being Cat People (‘82), depending who you ask. All three films are justified and rightfully viewed as classics amongst their ‘50s counterparts likely because they were made in a decade that had something new and at its height available to cinema. I struggle to see any legitimate advancements in filmmaking today, which may be responsible for lackluster remakes and genre films, in general. But I was able to see this in 35mm for its 30th anniversary at Exhumed Films Class of 1988 Fest, alongside four other horror films released that year— Night of the Demons, with writer/producer Joe Augustyn in person for a live introduction/Q&A; Slime City, shown from a personal 16mm print of writer/director Greg Lamberson, who also attended for an intro/Q&A; Maniac Cop, shown from a personal answer print belonging to director William Lustig, who, too, did a live Q&A for the film; the event was topped off with Waxwork. I also got to have a long chat (probably too long for him) with Bill Lustig. We briefly talked about the Zodiac killer, Sam Peckinpah, and how Martin Scorsese gave him encouraging words while making Raging Bull, telling him how making porn doesn’t make you any less of a filmmaker, and also telling me how he was hanging around with Joe Spinell watching Scorsese shoot the sequence in Taxi Driver where Peter Boyle gives less-than-helpful advice to De Niro outside the diner (I’ll always think about that fact now when rewatching that scene). We also agreed about the Maniac remake, disagreed about Gaspar Noé, and I got my Media poster and VHS (also signed by Tom Savini and Caroline Munro) of Maniac signed. #chuckrussell

If I could save the life of one movie character, it would be Nancy Thompson from A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. She lost her friends and her mother to Freddy. It drove her father to deep denial and reclusive alcoholism. She faced things. That was her gift. Her mother told her so. She overcame Freddy by slowly learning how his mind works and taking back all the power she had given him. Nancy turned all of her experiences into a career in psychology, specializing in sleep disorders. When she returned home she found that Freddy was back, stronger than before. She could have fled. It would have been the choice for most people. She had a promising career to think about. She had the dream suppressant Hypnocil. Freddy couldn’t get her. But she did the most selfless act possible. Not for revenge. This movie is much more intelligent than that. She stayed to help the children who she believed in. Good kids – smart kids. Again, using her gift to face things. No other adult could come to terms with what was going on with the troubled youth. Freddy was manipulating things so the teens would fight among themselves and lose control of even their wakeful world. Any help that could possibly be given to them was misdiagnosed with even the best of intentions. Nancy gave them strength. Courage to face their fear. She brought out their dream powers and helped them realize they need unity to fight Freddy and survive. Not denial, blame, anger, or tears. Children often inherit the burdens of their parents. She offered them a fighting chance. Freddy was cunning and relentless, and knew the mind well. He finally killed Nancy using her strengths instead of her weaknesses against her – Love and Forgiveness. Tricking her into believing something she would never deny. Understand? Screenwriter Frank Darabont is a true emotional genius. Which movie character would you save? No tags, I ask everyone. #chuckrussell

Now Playing: A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS. This might be the last film I’ll be able to watch for Slasher Film Week and if that’s true, then I best go out with a bang. #ChuckRussell
