Aaaaahhh, sweet summer! Extended Family sessions are one of our very favorite things to photograph. Combine that with a 50th anniversary celebration…well, now we’re in heaven! It’s hard to believe it’s already been a year since we met Jim and Jean and had the honor of creating some beautiful portraits of them with their family to celebrate their Golden Anniversary. To say that I LOVE their relationship would be an understatement. They’re patient and kind, and they're funny. There’s a rhythm between the two of them that I imagine probably only occurs after spending 50 years with someone. As we were designing the album of their session that would be given to each of their children that Christmas, Jean shared a quote with me that remains one of the most beautiful I have ever read. A character in Louis de Berniere’s novel “Corelli’s Mandolin” describes a long marriage like this: “Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it. We had roots that grew toward each other underground, and when all the pretty blossoms had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two.” It brings tears to my eyes even as I type it. To witness the love Jim and Jean share, and to have had the opportunity to learn about their lives and their family…well, it reminds me why we do what we do. It reminds me of the privilege and the sheer responsibility we have as professional photographers to tell people’s stories. And, most importantly, it shows me what to strive for. Happy 51st (a little late), dear Jim and Jean.
