This is Pelecanus schreiberi, potentially one of the largest pelicans ever described from fossil remains. Described from a portion of a femur determined to belong to a female by the presence of medullary bone, it was estimated to have been large as the largest male great white and Dalmatian pelicans today (~70in long, 11.8ft wingspan, 33lb). Now, in all modern pelicans, the male is the larger of the two sexes, so assuming proportions similar to modern day pelicans, we can imagine that the male P. schreiberi was quite a bit larger. This places it at a wingspan of at least 13ft, and potentially 40lb, making it one of the largest flying birds ever. Of course, this is all guesstimating, there's no exact way to tell P. schreiberi had the exact proportions that modern day pelicans do. But exciting to think of how large it may have gotten. P. schreiberi is Zanclean (Early Pliocene) in age, found in North Carolina. #birds
