Adult cardiomyocytes are non-proliferative, meaning that our heart muscle cells don't grow as adults. That's why injuries such as myocardial infarction, also known as a heart attack, can cause so many functional problems down the line. During development, however, fetal cardiomyocytes are highly proliferative and grow quickly to support the fetus. Cells within the heart valves, which separate the chambers of the heart, also grow to prevent backflow of blood when the heart contracts. Researchers and scientists are now investigating what factors differentiate fetal from adult cardiomyocytes in hopes of creating regenerative therapies that can improve heart function in adults after injuries such as heart attacks. . Here, an embryonic heart is stained for proliferating cells (PCNA, green), heart valves (periostin, red), and nuclei (blue). PCNA is a DNA clamp protein that binds DNA and recruits other proteins necessary for DNA replication. Periostin is a structural matrix protein that in the heart is largely expressed in the heart valves. . Taken with a Zeiss LSM 880 Confocal Microscope . #biology

Sitting in the sun reading What Nature Does For Britain. As I've completed studies which mainly focused on the human biological condition/Biomedicine, I'll be turning my focus towards the environmental aspects of society from September. Already this book proves how intertwined both areas really are and I can use the knowledge of the human condition and apply it to the impact of the environment. This book is super interesting and packed with stats which are shocking. Including how up to 50% of our body protein is a direct consequence of ammonium nitrates in fertilisers! #biology
