As we count down to , we're excited to welcome the women from @OneNationExchange sewing collective to demonstrate their craft and show off their Shweshwe products. They will be here on Wed, July 18 from 10:30 am - 12 pm. Shweshwe (pronounced "Shway Shway") fabric was first introduced to Africa by colonizers in a plain indigo blue. Over time, vibrant colours and geometric designs were incorporated as South Africans embraced it as their own. The Museum's Boutique provides One Nation Exchange, located in Winnipeg, with fabric from South Africa. Many of the women in the collective are from African countries who spent years in refugee camps escaping war, persecution and human rights violations. The Boutique is proud to carry pillows, coin purses and pencil cases featuring Shweshwe fabric. Each woman retains a portion of the proceeds from every item sold. The pillows each have a colourful pattern on them.
